Ryan Kirkham grew up in the little logging town of 100 Mile House, British Columbia. With scholarships in both football and volleyball, he graduated from Trinity Western University in Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Education and was later awarded his teaching certificate by British Columbia’s Ministry of Education. During his college career, Ryan attended a semester on Maui studying advanced coral reef ecology and tropical botany, and he traveled with Athletes in Action to South Africa and Zambia where he conducted volleyball clinics and played with national teams.
Ryan’s experiences have seen him as a Marine Science instructor at Seacamp in the Florida Keys, a naturalist for killer whale, dolphin, and beluga whale shows at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, a tree planter in British Columbia (including encounters with grizzly bears), and a manager of video game testers in Europe and Canada.
The first year that Ryan taught at Haney-Pitt Meadows Christian School was that school’s first year of offering Grade 10; subsequently, a grade was added each year through Grade 12, a pattern familiar to our Maui Prep ‘ohana. The Biology course that Ryan taught ranked in the top five for the province for three years in a row. Ryan also taught Physical Education and Leadership, coached volleyball, basketball, and badminton, and served as Athletic Director for five years.
He and wife Stephanie are the proud parents of Jonah, Maui Prep Class of 2021, daughter Avery, Maui Prep Class of 2025, and Asher, Maui Prep Class of 2031. Ryan is one of the founding faculty members of Maui Prep looks forward to seeing the school extend itself as a leader in 21st Century education on Maui.
