Joe Lee grew up in rural Oklahoma. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education-Mathematics from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in 1979. He received his MA in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1986. Mr. Lee holds a lifetime teaching certificate in Missouri for Mathematics in grades 7 – 12. He is in his 38th year of teaching. He was department chair from 1983 to 2008 at Parkway West Middle School when he retired from teaching full time.
In 1988, he was chosen as the first Teacher of the Year by faculty vote at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield, Missouri. In 2007, Mr. Lee received National Board Certification in Mathematics for Early Adolescence thanks to the encouragement and support from his wife Amy. He has chaired several national committees, including the MathCounts Question Writing Committee for the 1997 contest year and the Sign Committee for the 2006 NCTM Annual Meeting. Mr. Lee has been a member of Mathematics Educators of greater St. Louis (MEGSL), Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) since 1980. He was the recipient of the Middle School Teacher of the Year awards for MEGSL (1995) and MCTM (1993). He has made numerous presentations at annual state and national level meetings of all three professional organizations. Mr. Lee was the coach of West Middle’s math team for several years. His students won first place in over 60 local or state contests during his tenure.
He and his wife, Amy, are happy to be part of the Maui Prep ‘Ohana.
