Ray Parnell grew up in North Carolina, and after completing high school, he enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned degrees in Computer Science and English Literature. He also studied Japanese for three years at the University to prepare for his dream of living in Asia. After graduation, he moved to Japan to teach English and to further his study of Japanese language and culture.
After many years of living and working in Japan, Ray Parnell made the move to Maui and joined the Maui Prep ‘Ohana in 2007.
Ray currently teaches high school Japanese and middle school English. The Maui Prep Japanese program has grown substantially over the years. In addition to having students who have passed international Japanese ability exams, Maui Prep’s team is now among the best in the state at the Japan Wizards Competition held every year on Oahu.
Ray and his wife Ai are the proud parents of Kilakila and Ty Parnell, both students at Maui Prep.
