George C. Baker, Head of School

The education career of Maui Prep’s Headmaster, George C. Baker, spans four decades—and the world. Not only has George taught young students and adults, he has also been an administrator and curriculum developer in middle and high schools. A decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, George served as the History Department Chair at the American School of The Hague in The Netherlands, has served on the United Nations delegation to the Russian Ministry of Education, has served on the Harvard Graduate School of Education National Advisory Board and in a leadership capacity as co-chair since 2000-2005; he has served on the ASCD National Health Education Committee (2004) and the Federal Reserve Bank Economic Education Committee (2003–2004). He is an active member of the Maui Independent School Heads Organization, serves as the President of the Maui Preparatory Academy Foundation. He has served on over six accreditation teams in Arizona, California and Maryland, and served on the HAIS-WASC Accreditation Teams for Kamehameha School Maui campus (2005) and Punahou School (2010). George has been recognized by the Hawaii Community Foundation as an outstanding non-profit director and is currently one of their only school Heads serving as a PONO Fellow.

It is rare to find an educator with George’s breadth of experience, including parochial K–8, coed public 6–8, international pre-K–12, coed independent K–12, girls 4–12, boys K–8, and Episcopal pre-K–12 schools. George is an expert in scheduling, student assessment, and faculty evaluations. George enjoys the creative challenges of assisting in the founding and development of this coed independent school on the island of Maui.

George is an avid tennis player, and played at the professional level in 1966.  Most recently he has involved himself in producing and showing wire sculptures in an Upcountry Maui gallery and has written over 52 chapters of a fictional book.
