Karen Swierkos
Karen Swierkos, Second Grade Teacher
Coming from a large, supportive family, Karen Swierkos feels privileged to be part of the Maui Prep Ohana. She provides her students with a stimulating learning environment to develop the skills they need to pursue their dreams. Karen majored in Elementary Education with a specialization in Early Childhood, at West Liberty State College, West Virginia, and earned a Master’s Degree in Math Education from Marshall University Graduate College in Charleston. Before coming to Maui Prep, she taught at preschools, elementary, and middle schools on the East Coast and in Lahaina. The highlight of her life to date has been working as Children’s Programming Counselor with the Disney Cruise Line—living on a ship and meeting families from all around the world for a year gave her new perspectives on education. Karen has also served as a volunteer with Special Olympics and as a youth camp basketball coach.
Karen’s free time is spent hiking, surfing, and in the many outdoor activities Maui offers. She visits family and friends as often as possible, spending time with nieces and nephews; she enjoys watching or participating in sports, and is a huge fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers.
