Chris Border
Chris Border, Upper School Math and Physics
One of the first memories math and science teacher Chris Border has about growing up were the long cross-country driving trips his family took every summer to visit new states, parks and historic places throughout the US and Canada. These experiences filled Chris with a desire to explore and experience the diversity of our country and the world.
Inspired by his high school Physics teacher, Chris left the Midwest to pursue an undergraduate degree in physics at the University of Rochester. His ambition to further his understanding of physics, coupled with a desire to see other parts of the country, next led him to the graduate program in physics at the University of Washington. There, he focused on research on the teaching and learning of physics. After several years as a graduate teaching assistant, Chris decided to make teaching his career and spent a year with his wife, Carolyn, in Juneau, Alaska, working on a Masters degree in teaching. From there, he went to Unalaska, Alaska, to take up a math and science position at a small, but very diverse, high-achieving district in the remote Aleutian Islands. Chris’s family grew during his eight years in Unalaska to include two sons, Jacob and Andrew, now 7 and 4. While in Unalaska, Chris was also able to further expand his horizons with travel fellowships to Japan and the Galapagos Islands where he looked more closely at issues in international education, particularly in his subject areas.
Chris and his family are very excited to be a part of another close-knit island community here on Maui and look forward to being able to contribute to the diversity and experiences of the Maui Preparatory Academy family!
