John Deal, Upper School Social Studies
John grew up in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up in Brazil, John was always attracted to the beaches and the vibrant culture of Rio and after his parents moved him to Arizona, he always knew someday he would live again near the ocean. After graduating from Arizona State University with a history degree, John entered the business world briefly before realizing that teaching was his real passion. He returned to college to get his teaching certificate and taught at both public schools and a charter school in the Phoenix area.
John brings over ten years of teaching experience to Maui Prep. As a Brazilian and lover of soccer, he also brings a passion and competitiveness for all kinds of team sports at the high school level. Since joining our staff, John has found a new passion in cross-country and volunteers his time to help our Maui Prep students reach new levels of running excellence.
Once the opportunity arose to teach at Maui Preparatory Academy, John jumped at the chance to teach at an excellent school with the added bonus of being near the ocean! John also loves to travel, learn new cultures and visit his family who are usually spread around the globe in various continents.
