Maui Prep classes begin Wednesday, August 9, 2023!

Our administrators are available during the summer to help you prepare your child for the school year.  Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Summer Reading 2023

Summer has arrived! You have worked hard all year, and you deserve a break. Go to the beach. Relax with your family. Swim in the ocean. Play games. Enjoy yourself. . . Then, keep enjoying yourself by picking up a book, and do the best thing you can for your mind: READ.

In addition, enrollment in AP classes requires preliminary assignments to be completed by the first day of classes (August 9, 2023). 

Upper School Summer Reading 2022

**Students taking AP Language and Composition or AP Literature and Composition do not need to complete this Summer Reading assignment.  These students have their own AP specific summer reading assignment.  All AP Approval forms should have been submitted prior to the end of school in order to enroll in any AP course.**

You will need to read two books in total this summer:

2. A book of your choice (suggestions may be taken from this list)

This is the minimum amount of reading we expect you to do. In truth, if you want to expand your knowledge, your intelligence, your college possibilities, and your academic strength, you’ll embrace the challenge to read all you can this summer. Teachers and parents provide the path, but only you can make the positive decision to feed your mind. Embrace the opportunity!

Read the required book and underline, highlight, and take notes on what interests you. Read with a pen or pencil in your hand and/or annotate your Ebook. Bring the book with you on the first day of school, and be ready to show your understanding of the book when you return. Keep track of all the books you read this summer.

As a reminder, it is expected that students will not cheat, lie, plagiarize, or claim products generated by artificial intelligence as their own. Any suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, or use of artificial intelligence will be investigated.

Assignments:

After you complete each book, complete each of the following:

  1. Write a 1-2 page literary analysis (in the 3rd person). Make sure it is in MLA format, typed, double spaced, the first line is indented, your name, title, and class are included. 

  2. For the book of your choice, write a 1-2 page book review. When you do the book review you may want to consider the following: 

  • What was the story about? 

  • Who were the main characters?

  • What did they do? What challenges did they face? 

  • Could you relate to any of the characters in the story? How?

  • Have you ever done or felt some of the things the characters did? 

  • Did you like the book?

  • What was your favorite part? Least favorite part? 

  • What might you change? 

  • Would you recommend this book to another person? Why or why not?

3. Complete the summer reading log with titles and authors of each book you read this summer.  Be sure to have your parents sign your log.

Bring a printed copy on your first day of school.

Middle School Summer Reading 2023

Reading Expectation: You are required to read at least two books in total this summer:  

1. Required Text (assigned by grade level)

2. A "good-fit" book of your choice (suggestions may be taken from this list, but not required).

Two books represent the minimum amount of reading expected throughout summer; please feel free to go above and beyond the expectation.

Assignments:

1. Required book assignment:

Read the required text. As you read, please underline, highlight, and take notes on what interests you, questions that arise, images that you have.

Complete the Required Text Assignment (below). Students are expected to write 3 paragraphs based on the prompts below pertaining to the required book. This assignment should be printed and brought to school on the first day of school.

Part 1: Text to Self:  Write one paragraph (5-7 sentences) that answers at least one of the following questions. 

  • What does this story remind me of in my life?

  • How is this story similar or different to my life?

  • Has something like this ever happened to me?

  • What were my feelings when I read this story?

  • Have I changed my thinking as a result of reading this story?

Part 2: Text to Text : Write one paragraph (5-7 sentences) that answers at least one of the following questions.

  • What does this remind me of in another book I’ve read or TV show/movie I’ve seen?

  • How is this text similar or different to others I’ve read or watched?

Part 3:Text to World : Write one paragraph (5-7 sentences) that answers at least one of the following questions.

  • What does this remind me of in the real world?

  • How is this text similar or different to things that happen in the real world?

  • How does the book relate to the world around me?

2. Choice book assignment

Create a “Book in a Bag” and fill it with 6 items pertaining to either the characters or main events in the story.

  • Using a paper bag (you can get one from Safeway), create an illustration of your favorite part of the book.

  • Create/find 6 items to be placed in the bag.  These items should be something significant to the characters, theme, setting, or plot of your story.

  • List each item on the back of the bag, and explain why it is important.

  • Decorate your bag creatively.

  • Bag presentations will occur the first week of school
