As we kick off the year, we want to ensure everyone is familiar with our campus safety and security protocols. These procedures are in place to protect our students, staff, and community.
We certainly enjoyed welcoming back our returning families and getting to know our new ones. As we kick off the year, we want to ensure everyone is familiar with our campus safety and security protocols. These procedures are in place to protect our students, staff, and community.
Campus Traffic & Drop-Off Reminders
Drive slowly and stay alert. Please avoid using your phone while driving on or near campus. Students and pedestrians are always present, and a distraction can be dangerous. Student drivers must also follow driving rules.
Follow the one-way traffic flow. Do not drive against traffic for any reason.
Pedestrian access: Students and guests who park outside the gates should use the pedestrian gate, not the main drive-through gate.
Preschool drop-off/pick-up Parking: The parking area in front of the Administration Office is reserved for quick drop-offs and pick-ups for preschool families only who escort their children to and from our Preschool. Faculty and staff do not park there to keep it available for these needs. Families who are not from the preschool are asked to also refrain from parking in this area during drop-off and dismissal times.
Please don't park your vehicle curbside unless specified by personnel.
Security Procedures
A security officer will be stationed at the front gate at all times. They may stop drivers if they do not recognize the vehicle.
All visitors must check in at the front office before proceeding onto campus. Please do not simply visit classrooms without checking in at the front office.
Lunch deliveries: Please limit them as much as possible. We encourage families to pack a lunch or use our Boonli lunch program for the Penne Pasta Food Truck.
Dismissal
Be patient and stay off your phone while approaching our school and while on campus. Ms. Karen will be directing traffic. Please follow her instructions for everyone’s safety. She will provide warnings and could request that those not following safety guidelines lose their driving privileges onto campus, meaning you’ll have to park outside and walk onto campus to pick up your child(ren).
Your cooperation helps ensure an efficient and safe dismissal for all students.
Emergency Preparedness
In the case of non-life-threatening events (e.g., power outage, water main break), we will care for your child until you can arrive. Due to these circumstances and dependent on the time of day, the decision will be made if school should be dismissed early. Please do not worry. Under such circumstances, we always reflect on whether the services will return to normal. If it’s too lengthy, it’s not worth having individuals use our facilities, restrooms, etc. If parents cannot pick up their children promptly, do not worry; students are our Number 1 priority. We have a great dedicated team, and we always make it work. Children will never be left unattended, and we will remain on campus until a parent or guardian arrives.
We encourage all families to sign up for text alert notifications through The Nest. For help, reach out to:
Tsunami protocols: Maui Prep is located above the Tsunami zone (Safe Zone) and we will remain on campus in such events. We invite you to come to our campus if you need a safe place. Traffic can be a big concern; be prepared. An emergency bag in your car is very important; consider it.
If we ever need to evacuate Maui Prep, our off-site reunification area will be at Napili Park. There, we can ensure that students are reunited with you.
Ongoing Emergency Training
Faculty and staff will participate in active shooter drills and other emergency preparedness sessions in collaboration with the Maui Police and Fire Departments. Many of us have done these trainings already; however, we have new faculty and staff, and it’s always important to review and revise.
We follow the nationally recognized “I Love U Guys” Standard Response Protocol, which includes:
Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter procedures. The Maui Police Department presented this to us, and our in-classroom text alert/Public Announcement (P.A.) system follows this protocol.
We are fortunate to have Hector and Karen Salas on our team, both former police officers from California who bring invaluable expertise in campus safety and training. They will help guide and train our staff in best practices, asking first responders for further training and guidance.
We will continue to provide updates throughout the year. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community safe. It truly takes all of us working together to ensure everyone’s safety. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Hector Salas at hsalas@mauiprep.org - Facilities Manager or Karen Salas at ksalas@mauiprep.org
Mahalo for your attention to this. Have a great rest of your day.
