Life at Maui Prep

Student Life > Life at Maui Prep | College Counseling

At Maui Prep, Academics stand as one of the school’s three foundational pillars, alongside Athletics and the Arts. True to this commitment, the school not only challenges students academically but also supports them in preparing for and gaining admission to colleges that align with their strengths, goals, and interests.

The Maui Prep College Center offers personalized, one-on-one guidance throughout the college search and application process. Students receive tailored support to help them explore options, clarify goals, and build a strong application. Each year, Upper School students engage in a series of structured activities designed to prepare them for the evolving demands of college admissions.

Maui Prep House System

The Maui Prep Hale (House) System is a transformative initiative designed to unite students, families, faculty, and staff across all grade levels, fostering unity, belonging, and spirited engagement. Rooted in Hawaiian values and inspired by the 10 Commitments to Living Aloha, this system supports student growth in character, academics, service, and school spirit through friendly competition, intentional mentoring, and shared goals. It also encourages greater participation, volunteerism, and fundraising, all vital to enriching the Maui Prep experience.

There are four Hales, representing "One 'Ohana":

  • Golden Torches (Gold/Ochre): Symbolizing passion, brightness, and vision, Golden Torches are radiant, determined, and embody purpose and leadership.
  • Sapphire Waves (Aqua/Blue): Representing intelligence, adaptability, and harmony, Sapphire Waves are dynamic, welcoming, and powerful, meeting challenges with resilience and a spirit of collaboration.
  • Obsidian Mountains (Black): Symbolizing resilience, clarity, and inner strength, Obsidian Mountains are solid, thoughtful, and reliable, providing a strong foundation for others and upholding high standards of responsibility and truth.
  • Silver Stars (Silver/White): Signifying clarity, intuition, and imagination, Silver Stars are dreamers, thinkers, and guides who pursue understanding with curiosity and grace.
Each Hale is led by a Faculty House Leader who serves as a mentor and community builder, coordinating meetings, spirit events, and service projects. One to two Lead Parents assist with family engagement, decorations, events, and fundraising. Students and siblings are sorted into the same Hale from preschool through high school, and new members are ceremoniously sorted annually.

Activities include weekly assemblies, house chant development, Spirit Week/Homecoming challenges, and community building/service projects. Houses earn points for academics, participation, service, and leadership, with the year-end Hale Cup awarded to the winning House. The system's vision is to build a stronger, more connected ‘ohana where leadership, legacy, and the spirit of Aloha thrive.

Student Senate

The Maui Prep Student Senate is comprised of Upper School students (grades 9-12) who are actively engaged in developing their leadership, planning, and execution skills. This student-led, teacher-supported body plays a vital role in enhancing the school community through various initiatives.
The Student Senate is responsible for sponsoring key school events such as dances and Spirit Week, fostering school spirit and camaraderie. They also organize and participate in meaningful service opportunities, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the community. Furthermore, the Senate supports school arts and athletics programs, contributing to a well-rounded student experience. Through these diverse activities, members of the Student Senate gain invaluable experience in leadership and event management.
