Hope’s story began in the midst of chaos — she was just about eight weeks old when she and her siblings were evacuated from the Lahaina Fires. She ended up in the care of Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, even though they typically only train dogs from their own breeding program. But they saw something special in Hope — and an opportunity to make a difference on West Maui.
As luck would have it, the organization had already reached out to Mr. Kirkham about bringing therapy dogs to campus. In one of those casual, “by the way” conversations, they mentioned their puppy fostering program and asked if he knew any families who might be interested in raising a future therapy dog. He didn’t hesitate — he knew just the right home...
From there, Mrs. Kirkham and Hope made monthly trips to the Assistance Dogs campus in Makawao for training during Hope’s first year. She graduated from “kindergarten” with flying colors, officially became a Kirkham and Maui Prep’s very own therapy dog.
These days, you can find Hope soaking up the sun, curled up in an office, or joyfully roaming campus collecting belly rubs — and the occasional stray bite of someone’s lunch. She’s known for her ability to instantly calm a room, whether it’s a loud and boisterous preschool classroom or an Upper School English class studying Macbeth. She’s not just a therapy dog — she’s 'Ohana.
