Performing Arts Poised to Soar!

Reuben Pali, a Lahaina native and founder of the Maui Music Mission, is our K-5 music instructor. Mr. Pali has taught over 500 children through his after-school program, and now he is sharing his passion with our students. Our second through fifth graders are diving into ukulele, learning tablature and rehearsing songs for the Halloween and Holiday Highlights performances. Fourth and fifth graders are able to take their instruments home to practice, allowing them to hone their skills. Kindergarten and first-grade students are building a foundation in music theory. They're exploring rhythm patterns and notes using a variety of percussion instruments. All students will have the opportunity to show off their hard work at the Holiday Highlights performance in December.

Sarah Gowans, our Lower School Drama Teacher and Middle/Upper School Music Director, is leading students through a variety of exciting projects. In the lower school, students are using social-emotional learning and improvisation to explore storytelling and character development. The fourth and fifth graders are preparing to present the Gettysburg Address. This poetry-based project helps them build essential theatrical skills like projection, memorization, and working as an ensemble. Our second and third graders are working on the piece "Am I a Builder." Ms. Gowans is also the music director for our upcoming Middle and Upper School production of Matilda the Musical JR.

Under the direction of Nathalie Smith, our third, fourth, and fifth-grade dancers are learning the elements of dance and dance theory. They are hard at work preparing for their annual Halloween performance.

 

Rehearsals for Matilda the Musical JR. are well underway! Middle and Upper School students are rehearsing during elective blocks, with both cohorts coming together for a Sunday rehearsal to prepare for the big show.
