Trevor Sturgeon Highlights Week of College Counseling
Maui Prep hosted College Admissions consultant Mr. Trevor Sturgeon for a week-long visit, during which he connected with every high school student, their parents, and our dedicated faculty and staff.
Mr. Sturgeon’s visit was integral to the ongoing efforts of the College Counseling team, led by Dr. John James and Mrs. Jessica Lucia. The team began working with students back in June, focusing on polishing application essays and conducting intentional searches for colleges that are the best "good-fit" for each student.
Early Admissions Successes
While most admission decisions are made in the spring, several Pueo seniors have already received acceptances from their top-choice universities, demonstrating the strength of their applications and the preparation provided by Maui Prep:
Keiki Dahmann: Colorado State University (for their top animal science program)
Sacha Salem: University of Hawaiʻi (Athlete)
Sofia Mallari: University of Hawaiʻi (Athlete)
Ava Kawahara: Utah Tech (Athlete)
Kai DaProza: Pace University
Comprehensive Parent and Student Meetings
Mr. Sturgeon held morning meetings for parents across all high school grade levels:
Freshman and Sophomore parents received a thorough introduction to the college selection process.
Junior parents were given a preview of their next critical courses of action.
Senior parents received targeted advice on financial planning for college.
Furthermore, Mr. Sturgeon met individually with every junior student, meticulously cataloging their interests and goals as he and the College Counseling team prepare to begin their intensive work with the Class of 2027 in just over six months.
Faculty Workshop Provides Insider View
In a special session, Mr. Sturgeon held a workshop for Middle and Upper School educators. He presented the teachers with three fictional college applications, explaining the goals of the university's admissions committees. Faculty then collaborated to counsel each other and assign an "admit," "waitlist," or "deny" decision, providing an invaluable and eye-opening experience into the perspective of the admissions process.
