Preschoolers Learn Best Through Play

The Maui Prep indoor and outdoor learning spaces allow students to grow socially, emotionally and academically through developmentally-appropriate experiences with their teachers and peers. By observing and reflecting on children's interests, our licensed teachers design units of study that encourage social and emotional growth, while developing cognitive learning and other skills necessary to progress to kindergarten.

  • Scientific Inquiry

Our Maui Prep Preschool teachers observe the preschoolers' interests and plan curriculum and projects that will engage the students. More than sharing or explaining a new concept, the students follow a model of
    • developing and answering driving questions
    • making real world connections
    • forming hypotheses
  • Sensory Play

Preschoolers absorb new things through their five senses. Sensory play establishes a foundation to allow preschoolers to work towards more complex tasks, strengthens language development and vocabulary, improves problem-solving skills, and supports cognitive growth.

How our classroom supports sensory play:

    • Sensory bin
    • Art corner
    • Outdoor garden
  • Social and Emotional Development

The Maui Prep Preschool is 'ohana can enroll up to 32 students each year (current enrollment may be less) allowing for an eclectic group of personalities, interests, and abilities. Preschool social-emotional skills include being able to get along and cooperate with others, manage strong feelings, focus attention, and persist at challenging tasks.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you have a part-time program?

No, our program is designed for students to attend each weekday, during normal school hours.  Our calendar aligns with Maui Prep's academic calendar.
  • Is Financial Aid available for preschool?

While Maui Prep does not award Financial Aid for preschool students, you may be eligible for assistance through the Preschool Open Doors (POD) program, administered by PATCH (People Attentive To Children), which provides subsidies to help families afford quality early learning. Recent expansions, including year-round applications and increased income eligibility, make the program accessible to more families with children aged 2-5. To apply, families can visit the PATCH Hawaii website or use the online application portal at childcaresubsidyapplication.dhs.hawaii.gov.
  • How do I help my child prepare for preschool?

If this is your child's first time at preschool, you can help them prepare by working together to master some basic skills that help them be self-sufficient in the classroom.  Some examples to practice are:
    • Open and close lunch box and containers
    • Put on/remoe shoes and socks
    • Pull up and down their underwear/clothing to use the restroom (Please note: all students must be fully potty-trained by the first day of school or you may be asked to exit the program)
