A Guardian in Stone: The Pueo Arrives at Maui Prep

The Maui Prep landscape is about to welcome a powerful new presence that bridges the school’s history with its bright future.
A magnificent stone statue of the Hawaiian short-eared owl, or Pueo, will soon be permanently installed along the busy thoroughfare connecting the Otto Administration building and the Bright Beginnings Preschool. This landmark addition was commissioned by Dr. Miguel Solis and made possible through the generosity of private donors, brought to life by the skilled hands of artist William Herrera.

The choice of the Pueo as the school’s mascot dates back to Maui Prep’s very first year, when the inaugural student body held a historic vote to define their identity. Choosing between the "Outriggers" and the "Pueo," the students opted for the silent, soaring grace of the native owl. This connection is more than symbolic; the Pueo remains a frequent visitor to the campus today, often seen perching quietly on the fences during the soft light of early morning and late evening.

In Hawaiian culture, the Pueo is deeply revered as an ‘aumakua. These ancestral spirits serve as family gods or personal guardians, acting as a vital link between descendants and their lineage. As protectors, they are believed to offer guidance, provide warnings, and lend strength to family members during times of stress or danger. By bringing this guardian to the heart of the campus, the school honors a tradition of spiritual and physical protection for every student who walks its paths.

Much like the iconic statues that define legendary college campuses across the globe, this Pueo will serve as a focal point for school tradition and a beacon of school spirit. It is destined to become a place where students seek a bit of good luck before exams or gather to commemorate historic moments in their academic journeys. The statue represents a lasting anchor for the community, embodying the wisdom and resilience the school aims to instill in its pupils.

The community recently caught its first glimpse of the future landmark when Dr. Solis unveiled the pattern for the sculpture. Work is progressing steadily, with the official installation expected to be completed in time for the commencement festivities at the Ho‘ike ceremony. Once in place, the stone Pueo will stand as a silent, watchful protector of Maui Prep for generations to come.
