Pueo Volleyball Secures Second-Place Finish at West Maui Wahine Classic

The Maui Prep girls volleyball team delivered a strong performance last week as the school hosted the Annual West Maui Wahine Classic (formerly the Pueo Invitational).
The event marked a premier weekend of competition inside the Bozich Center, which was buzzing with energy and looking exceptional following its summer floor refinishing.

With Hurricane Lala bearing down on the island chain, three teams were forced to withdraw due to travel concerns. Tournament organizers quickly reshuffled and condensed the draw of pool play and seeded playoffs to ensure all teams could complete safety preparations. After an opening-round loss to Immaculate Heart High (Los Feliz, CA), Maui Prep rallied to defeat Kihei Charter and secure the second seed heading into the playoff bracket.
Match Highlights
  • Junior Varsity: Maui Prep defeated Lahainaluna JV in straight sets (2-0).
  • Varsity: The Pueo earned a hard-fought, three-set victory over Lahainaluna Varsity that came down to the final points.
The rivalry match against Lahainaluna remains an annual highlight. Because the Lunas' team color is red and green is the official color of the Pueo, the matchup is affectionately known as the "Christmas Tree Match." With last week's victory, Maui Prep has now won the tradition five consecutive years. Fittingly, the event trophy features pillars wrapped in Santa and reindeer wrapping paper.
Maui Prep ultimately finished as tournament runner-up, falling to Immaculate Heart in the championship match after a grueling weekend of play.
Tournament All-Star Honors
Kelsey Reul and Zoey Offergeld were both named to the Tournament All-Star Team. Out of all participating athletes, only five players overall were selected for the prestigious honor.
Community Support and Event Operations
The tournament’s success was made possible by robust spectator turnout and dedicated staff support:
  • Laura Masslon: Managed admissions, operated concessions, and coordinated the referees' hospitality suite alongside her regular duties.
  • Alexis Merrill: Handled event media, creating graphics and display media featured on the Bozich Center screens.
  • Joe Lee: Staffed the official score table continuously throughout the tournament.
  • Coach Ryan Kirkham: Led the squad through the schedule adjustments and intense weekend competition.
