The Stack Report: September 8 Athletics Round-up
Before we get into any of the actual sports... we need to talk about Friday night, because BLING AND ICE night was an absolute PROBLEM (the good kind).
Y'all showed up dripping in more jewelry than a swap meet, and I have never been prouder of a group of people for potentially setting off a metal detector. I personally rocked three chains and enough rings to make TSA nervous, and I regret nothing. If your neck was a little sore Saturday morning (I know Jeff Halls was), that's just the price of looking that good. Mahalo to everyone who came out, got iced out, and made that gym absolutely electric — this is exactly the kind of energy that makes these kids want to run through a wall for us. As well, please ALWAYS feel free to email me photos/videos you get from games. I love to include them here!
Huge shoutout also has to go to our Prime Dance Team, coached by our very own Fine Arts Admin Nathalie Smith — they were so good I saw a Lānai coach quietly dancing to the song. Video below, you're welcome in advance.
VOLLEYBALL
Saturday we went to war with Lānai in a four-set battle that had me chewing through an entire pack of gum. We dropped set one, clawed set two back 25-17, and then set three was back and forth until sadly Lanai pulled away 27-25... still getting over this one. However, the good news being some of the stats are down below!
Zoey Offergeld: 25 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs. At this point I'm convinced she's contractually not allowed to have a quiet game.
Kelsey Reul (libero): 37 DIGS. Thirty. Seven. I've seen search-and-rescue teams with a lower success rate. That ball had zero chance of touching the floor on her watch.
Ashley Davis (setter): 33 assists, 2 aces, 4 digs. She's basically running her own delivery app at this point — the ball orders itself and Ashley makes sure it arrives on time, every time.
Reese Berliner: 10 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs. Quietly put together a stat line that would headline most nights, and nobody's even talking about it. Reese doesn't need the attention, she just needs the ball.
Ocean Violi: 3 kills, 9 digs, 2 assists. The definition of doing a little bit of everything, and doing all of it well.
Kailea Larsen: 1 kill, 1 block. Short and sweet, like a good text message.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our runners had themselves a week too. Luke Carden placed 19th in his SECOND EVER RACE and shaved 40 seconds off his time — for reference, that's the kind of improvement most people only get by cutting through a parking lot. Chase Lambrecht ran a perfectly even-split race and improved by 53 seconds, which as far as I understand running math, basically means he ran two good races back to back. And Michael and Ari both dropped nearly TWO FULL MINUTES off their 5k times, which is the kind of jump you'd expect if someone told them there was a Chick-fil-A at the finish line. Incredible week all around. Video of Luke crossing the finish line below!
This week the boys are heading to Hana for the Hana Relay, which means a wake-up call of 3:30 AM. My condolences to whoever's driving, and my deepest respect to whoever willingly sets an alarm with a 3 in front of it for a race.
THIS WEEK
No home games this week — we're headed to Molokai. If anyone wants to charter a boat, invite me!
