Prioritizing teamwork, dedication and persistence, the seniors on the Maui Prep boys and girls swim team showed up to practice and meets this winter with a strong mindset, and the student-athletes learned some valuable lessons along the way.

“I am grateful for all the experiences and lessons that swimming has brought me,” said Layla Merrill, one of the team’s 11 seniors. “One lesson that I learned over 10 years of swimming is diligence and consistency. I learned that the things that are uncomfortable will help us grow and become stronger.”

According to coach Lindsey Masterson, over the last four years, the seniors on the team consistently showed up for each other at practice and at competitions, and that was one of the biggest goals of the school’s swimming program.

“I want them to understand that their preparation affects not only themselves but their teammates,” Masterson said. “I hope they remember what it feels like to belong to something bigger than themselves — supporting others, showing up on tough days and learning that progress comes from small efforts repeated time after time. If they take that mindset onward, swimming has done its job.”

Accountability and following through on commitments were cornerstones for the team, which also enjoyed strong support from the community.

“We have been so well-supported from the very beginning,” Masterson said. “We have a wonderful group of parents who always showed up to help at the swim meets or help with our tradition of post-meet tailgates. Maui Prep really helps develop student-athletes who learn the value of discipline, resilience, organization and confidence.”

Swimming does not always produce immediate results, but the team’s large group of seniors demonstrated small, consistent efforts to improve in and out of the water. Watching all the students’ hard work pay off over the last four years has been rewarding for Masterson, especially as they prepare to move on to the next chapter of their lives.

“Coach Lindsey has taught me that having a positive mindset and attitude truly affects the outcome of situations,” said Finlay Royer, another senior on the team. “This team has taught me how to be more disciplined with myself and my work. I’ve learned how to push myself, stay committed and put consistent effort into the things that I care about.”

Each swimmer has a unique perspective on the lessons they’ve learned at Maui Prep, from developing discipline and focus to building lasting friendships and giving their best for the success of the team.
Senior Noah Richard said he came to the realization that the days he felt the most tired and unmotivated were the ones where he had to push himself the hardest.

“My most meaningful part of swimming at Maui Prep was the team itself,” senior swimmer Sacha Salem said. “Through tough practices, long meets and early morning practices, we built bonds that went beyond swimming. Knowing I had people who supported me and pushed me to do my best made my experiences memorable. I learned that showing up every day and giving my all, even when I was tired, is important.”

“Positivity and flexibility are the best attributes that I’ve learned,” added TJ Hehemann.

The most rewarding thing was not always being the fastest or winning for senior Tehya Chumley, who said it was also important to have fun and cheer on her teammates.
Senior Sloane Jucker said being part of the team taught her that through long practices, early mornings and moments of adversity, the effort you give not only shapes your own growth but also strengthens those around you.

“Overall, swimming has taught me to show up for others and be supportive as we are all happy to see each other succeed,” Jucker said.

For the younger swimmers at Maui Prep, the seniors have provided guidance, shared advice and served as role models on the team.

“One piece of advice I would give to younger swimmers at Maui Prep is to have fun,” said senior Sadie Stafford. “Enjoy the swim meets and the time you spend with your teammates. It is all meant to make you happy.”

Masterson said the seniors are leaving behind a legacy of dedication and camaraderie as they transition from high school to college or into the workforce.

“Our senior swimmers grew into leaders, teammates and young adults who truly understand what commitment and what a community in the process of rebuilding really means,” Masterson said. “I think the most important part of growth I’ve seen in them is how to show up for each other throughout all of the extreme ups and downs. I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of them and am confident they are ready for the college chapter of their lives.”

Seniors on the Maui Prep swim team include Sloane Jucker, Tehya Chumley, Sadie Stafford, Finlay Royer, Sacha Salem, Layla Merrill, Jack Leone, TJ Hehemann, Noah Richard, Isaac Goodreau and Noa Sheveland.
