The Arts Department pulled out all the stops for its annual Arts Night, delivering a vibrant celebration of creativity in all its forms.
Under the direction of Mrs. Stacey Coon and Mrs. Nathalie Smith, the event transformed the campus into a sprawling gallery and performance space.
Mrs. Coon’s students lined the halls of the Lower School and E-building classrooms with a stunning array of media, including pottery, resin art, charcoal drawings, digital designs, watercolors, and acrylic paintings. The exhibition also proudly showcased advanced AP Studio Art portfolios. In a particularly innovative twist, Mrs. Coon designed a dedicated blacklight gallery, featuring student pieces specifically created to be interpreted under UV light.
The main stage came alive with performances representing every discipline of the performing arts, featuring dynamic 'ukulele, vocal music, and dance sets. Mr. Reuben Pali’s kindergarten class—his youngest learners—warmed hearts as they opened the 'ukulele portion of the evening. The performance stood as a true testament to Mr. Pali's patience and devotion, allowing the audience to watch a beautiful progression of skill as each successive grade level took the stage. The musical journey evolved from the simple three-chord progressions of the first-grade class all the way to the fifth graders' impressive demonstration of complex note-picking.
Mrs. Sarah Gowans brought both vocal artistry and dramatic flair to the stage through her classes' musical numbers, which included standout performances from the Middle and Upper School elective blocks. Following the musical acts, Mrs. Nathalie Smith’s electrifying dance numbers did not disappoint. Students from various classes performed high-energy routines to classic tunes spanning from the 1990s to today, enhanced by shimmery lamé costumes that added an extra layer of visual excitement to the choreography.
Beyond the stages and galleries, the evening featured bustling vendor booths highlighting Maui Prep’s own artisans. Student artists Sadie Stafford and Leah Burns, alongside student entrepreneur Kaia Reader, manned booths to showcase and sell their work, while the Booster Club was on hand to keep attendees fueled with snacks and BBQ.
The memorable evening concluded with an emotional tribute to Mrs. Stacey Coon, led by Mrs. Smith, Sadie Stafford, Leah Burns, and Isaac Goodreau. The group shared heartfelt memories of Mrs. Coon, praising her outstanding tutelage and mentorship in the Upper School AP Art program. The tribute marked a bittersweet farewell, as Mrs. Coon will be relocating to Florida next year, leaving behind a lasting legacy of artistic excellence.
