Visual and Fine Arts

At Maui Preparatory Academy, the arts are one of the school’s three foundational pillars—Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Together, these pillars support the development of well-rounded students who are confident, creative, and prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Through visual and performing arts, students learn to express ideas, collaborate with others, and explore creativity with both discipline and imagination. Whether creating artwork in the studio, performing on stage, or contributing behind the scenes to a production, students discover the powerful role the arts play in communication, culture, and personal growth.

Maui Prep’s Arts program is designed as a vertically aligned K–12 experience, allowing students to build foundational skills in the early grades and pursue deeper artistic exploration as they grow. Rooted in the vibrant cultural landscape of West Maui, the program reflects the school’s commitment to cultivating thoughtful artists, confident performers, and visually literate individuals who understand the value of creativity in both education and community life.

"At Maui Prep, the arts are not an extracurricular activity—they are a vital part of how students learn to think creatively, communicate clearly, and work together. Our goal is to give every student the opportunity to discover the confidence that comes from creating and performing."
— Nathalie Smith, Director of Performing Arts

Visual and Fine Arts

The Visual Arts program encourages students to develop both technical skill and creative voice through exploration of diverse artistic media and techniques.

Beginning in the Lower School, students build foundational skills through painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media projects. As they progress through Middle and Upper School, students expand their knowledge of artistic processes while studying influential artists, design principles, and contemporary creative practices.

Upper School students may pursue advanced coursework including Art Foundations and AP Studio Art 2-D, where they develop original portfolios demonstrating technical mastery, creative investigation, and personal expression.

Dance

Dance at Maui Prep develops confidence, discipline, and artistic expression through movement. Students explore a variety of styles including jazz, hip hop, musical theatre, contemporary dance, and hula while building strength, coordination, and performance skills.

Performance is central to the dance program, with students working toward school events such as assemblies, Arts Night, and the annual May Day celebration.

Through dance, students learn to communicate ideas physically while developing stage presence, teamwork, and creative confidence.

Music

The Music program builds musical literacy, instrumental skills, and ensemble collaboration through hands-on musical experiences.

Students begin with rhythm and percussion in the early grades before progressing into ukulele, piano, voice, and band opportunities as they advance through the school. The Lower School ukulele program allows students to develop musicianship while performing together in ensemble settings.

Music students perform regularly throughout the year at school events including assemblies, May Day, and Arts Night.

Drama and Theater

The Theater program develops storytelling, communication, and performance skills through acting, dramatic play, and theatrical production.

Students learn acting technique, character development, voice and movement, and stagecraft while participating in major school productions each year. These productions allow students to experience the full creative process of theater—from rehearsal to live performance.

Theater at Maui Prep encourages students to become confident performers, thoughtful collaborators, and compelling storytellers.
